As a leader of the modern internet, Akamai plays an enormous role in the climate transition. Each year, more customers look to Akamai to help steward their sustainability journey. Our industry-leading emissions reporting helps customers navigate everything from complex regulatory requirements to sustainability priorities set by their board of directors. We empower customers to tell their story with a unique level of data specificity that is unmatched in the industry. As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, even more customers will be required to disclose their emissions in the coming years. New regulations in Europe and the U.S. have further underscored the importance of this work and highlighted the need to build capacity beyond the Akamai Corporate Sustainability team itself.
Sales Enablement Program
In preparation, Akamai is dedicating even more time and resources to scaling our sustainability program. In 2024, we kicked off a listening and learning journey to better understand how we could be the best possible partners for our customers when it comes to their environmental needs. We first met with customers and employees in EMEA to understand the contours of the conversation. We then used this feedback to launch an enablement program that will equip our Sales teams with the tools and skills to weave sustainability into every customer interaction.
With the program now launched, we look forward to continuing this journey in other regions to better understand how the conversation varies by geography. We seek to continuously improve our understanding of customer needs and meet them with thoughtful solutions and support.
Akamai Carbon Calculator
A key part of this effort is equipping our customers with the data to tell their unique sustainability stories. Many Akamai customers share our focus on reducing emissions, including those generated by their IT suppliers. That’s why we created the Carbon Calculator, a tool that shows an estimated calculation of the emissions produced by an individual customer’s actual use of Akamai delivery and security services.
Integrated into the Akamai Control Center, the Carbon Calculator provides an estimate of the emissions associated with a specific subset of customer traffic from the past 48 hours to a period of up to 400 days. Customers can see at a glance the total bytes delivered and the calculated emissions in grams, kilograms, and metric tonnes (m tonnes) of carbon dioxide equivalency (CO2e) for a given date range. The information reported by the calculator also provides a view of estimated emissions by country, color-coded by the volume of bytes and emissions, from low to high.
The Carbon Calculator is an innovative tool designed to keep Akamai customers informed and engaged on the issue of emissions reduction, reflecting our ongoing focus on sustainability.
Future Akamai Carbon Calculator
In partnership with the Akamai Data Experience and Analytics team, we are developing a more advanced carbon emissions calculator tool that functions across our global platform. With our in-depth approach to emissions measurement coupled with our industry-leading analytics expertise, we are working to bring a more customized way for customers to understand their impact on our platform.

We aim to work on these new and improved features to ensure our customers receive accurate and detailed information about their impact, using our platform. With our advanced measurement approach and more user-focused strategy, our carbon emissions calculator will be a practical tool for customers who seek to understand and ultimately reduce their carbon footprint related to their use of our global platform.

Our custom emissions reporting, available upon request, delivers the most comprehensive and detailed view of each customer’s carbon footprint, spanning both edge and non-edge services across our security and delivery platforms.
These tailored reports provide unique visibility into critical metrics such as power consumption, the proportion of the renewable energy mix powering their services, and the resulting emissions footprint. Additionally, the data is broken down by country and subservice, offering granular insights that empower our customers to make more informed decisions regarding their sustainability efforts and emissions reduction strategies.
By delivering these reports, we not only support our customers in better understanding their operational emissions but also enable them to integrate these insights into their own sustainability reporting. This capability is particularly valuable for businesses navigating increasingly stringent environmental regulations and stakeholder expectations.
